Savon de Marseille
Blocks of olive oil soaps have been crafted in the south of France since the Middle ages.  The coveted "Savon de Marseille" label was protected by law beginning in the 17th century.  Only those soaps made according to ancient methods could carry the "Savon de Marseille" label.

It takes two weeks to make Marseille soap.  Olive and vegetable oils are combined with ash from sea plants and Mediterranean sea water.  This mixture is heated for ten days in cauldrons, then poured into open pits to harden.  The soap is then cut into cubes, hand-stamped and set out to dry in the sun.  The fine white powder on the surface of the soap is sea salt which remains after the soap has dried.

Marseille soap is recommended by dermatologists throughout the world for its gentle, moisturizing qualities.  It is ideal for sensitive skin as it doesn't contain harsh chemicals or perfumes.  It has also been trusted for centuries to clean everything from linens to pots and pans.
