Some traditions endure because they simply work. Syrian olive oil soap has been made the same way for centuries, using nothing but time-honored methods and natural ingredients. We've offered it since we opened our doors more than twenty years ago, because soap doesn't need to be reinvented — just done right. Simple, gentle, nourishing, and natural.
The Process
Making this soap takes nine months, start to finish. It begins each late fall with the harvest of local olives and bay laurel berries. Cold-pressed olive oil, water, and sodium hydroxide are heated together in a large cauldron over several days, and bay laurel oil is stirred in near the end. The mixture is then poured into large frames set on the ground to cool and harden.
Once set, the soap is cut by hand with wooden rakes and stamped with the artisan's name. Each bar is stacked to age for six months to a year, developing the mild, long-lasting bar it's known for. The result: one of the finest all-natural soaps in the world.
How We Use It
We keep a bar by the kitchen sink, in the bath, as a solid shampoo bar, and even in the laundry room.
Gentle enough for everyday use in the shower or bath, this soap is especially well-suited to sensitive, dry, or easily irritated skin. Because it's made from simple, natural ingredients, it's gentle enough for infants, the elderly, and everyone in between.
